Aluminium Round Downpipe – Internal Joiner

On a three-storey building, a single 3-metre length of downpipe is not going to reach from the gutter outlet to the drain. You need two lengths, and those two lengths need joining. If that joint leaks, you have got water running down the wall in exactly the spot where you thought the drainage was sorted. If the joint is visible and clunky, it ruins the clean line of the downpipe run.

Our aluminium downpipe internal joiner solves both problems. It slides inside the pipe, bridging the joint internally so the connection is watertight and virtually invisible from the outside. Available in 76mm and 100mm to match our round downpipe range, and powder coated to any RAL colour. It is a simple fitting that keeps the whole system looking and performing as it should.

Product Overview

This internal joiner is a short aluminium sleeve that sits inside two adjoining sections of aluminium round downpipe. The upper pipe slides down over the top half of the joiner and the lower pipe slides up over the bottom half. The result is a flush joint with no external collar, no visible step and no interruption to the clean vertical line of the downpipe.

We supply the joiner in two sizes: 76mm and 100mm, matching the two round downpipe diameters in our aluminium rainwater system. Both sizes can be ordered in mill finish or powder coated to any RAL colour. Colour matching is standard practice. If the downpipe is powder coated, the joiner should be too, because even though it sits inside the pipe, the visible edge of the joint can sometimes be seen at close range.

Online Metal Store Ltd supplies these joiners from our base in Chelmsford, Essex. Ordering the joiner with the downpipe, clips and fittings from the same supplier means every component matches in profile, diameter and colour.

Key Benefits

Invisible flush joint

The joiner sits inside the pipe, so the external surface of the downpipe run remains smooth and unbroken. There is no external collar, no bolted clamp, no visible splice piece. From the ground, the downpipe looks like a single continuous length. That clean aesthetic matters on buildings where the rainwater system is visible, which is most buildings.

Watertight connection

The joiner bridges the inside of the joint, preventing water from escaping at the splice point. For an extra level of security, apply a bead of sealant to the outside of the joiner before sliding the pipes together. On exposed runs or high-volume systems, that sealant step is worth doing as standard practice.

Two sizes for the full range

We offer the joiner in 76mm and 100mm. The 76mm fits our standard round downpipe used on the vast majority of domestic properties across the UK. The 100mm fits the larger bore pipe used on commercial buildings, multi-storey developments and properties with large roof areas. The joiner size must match the downpipe size for a correct fit.

Powder coating in any RAL colour

Although the joiner is mostly hidden inside the pipe, the visible edge at the joint line can be seen at close range, particularly on lower downpipe sections at eye level. A colour-matched joiner eliminates any flash of bare aluminium at the joint. We coat to any RAL colour to match the rest of the system.

Lightweight and quick to fit

Slide the joiner into the first pipe, apply sealant if required, and push the second pipe down over it. The entire process takes less than a minute per joint. On a multi-storey run with two or three joints, the time saving over external clamped connectors is meaningful.

How to Join Two Aluminium Downpipes

The process is straightforward. Here is how to do it properly:

Start with the upper section of downpipe already fixed in position. Slide the internal joiner into the open bottom end of the upper pipe until roughly half the joiner is inside. If you want an extra layer of waterproofing at the joint, apply a bead of sealant around the outside of the exposed half of the joiner before fitting the next pipe. Our colour coded sealant works well for this, especially on powder coated systems where you want a colour-matched seal.

Push the lower section of downpipe up over the exposed half of the joiner until the two pipe ends butt together. The joint should now be flush and tight. Secure the lower pipe to the wall using an adjustable pipe clip positioned close to the joint to keep both pipe lengths stable and aligned. On longer runs, repeat the process at each joint.

Make sure each pipe section overlaps the joiner equally on both sides so the connection is centred. An uneven overlap weakens the joint and can allow the lower pipe to slip down over time.

When Do You Need a Downpipe Joiner?

Multi-storey downpipe runs

This is the most common scenario. A standard domestic downpipe run on a two-storey house is around 5 to 6 metres. Our downpipe comes in 3-metre lengths, so you need two lengths and one joiner to complete the run. On a three-storey property, you will typically need three lengths and two joiners.

Replacing a damaged section

If a section of downpipe is dented, cracked or corroded, you can cut out the damaged part and splice in a new section using two joiners, one at each end of the replacement piece. This is much quicker and cheaper than replacing the entire downpipe run.

Extending an existing system

If the building has been extended or the drainage layout has changed, you may need to extend the downpipe run. A joiner connects the new pipe length to the existing one. On these jobs, you might also need a downpipe bend or an adjustable offset to route the pipe around the new building work.

Commercial and multi-unit installations

On larger commercial buildings, downpipe runs can be 10 metres or more. That means three or four lengths of pipe and two or three joiners per run. Across a building with multiple downpipe positions, the joiner count adds up. Ordering them with the full system from Online Metal Store Ltd means everything arrives together, in the same colour, ready to install. The full round downpipe system includes 3 metre downpipe lengths, internal joiners (this product), adjustable pipe clips, bends, shoes and offsets.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an aluminium downpipe joiner?

An aluminium downpipe joiner is a short internal sleeve that connects two sections of round aluminium downpipe. It slides inside the pipe at the joint, creating a flush, concealed connection with no external collar or visible splice. The result is a smooth, uninterrupted downpipe run that looks like a single continuous length.

How do you join two aluminium downpipes together?

Slide the internal joiner halfway into the bottom of the upper pipe section. Apply sealant around the exposed half of the joiner if additional waterproofing is required. Push the lower pipe section up over the remaining half of the joiner until the two pipe ends butt together. Secure the lower pipe with an adjustable pipe clip close to the joint to keep both sections aligned and stable.

What size downpipe joiner do I need?

The joiner size must match the downpipe diameter. Use the 76mm joiner for 76mm round downpipe and the 100mm joiner for 100mm round downpipe. If you are unsure, measure the outside diameter of the pipe and order the matching joiner.

Do you need sealant on a downpipe joiner?

Sealant is not always essential, but it is good practice. Applying a bead of sealant around the joiner before fitting the second pipe creates an extra waterproof barrier at the joint. This is especially recommended on exposed runs, high-volume downpipe systems, and any joint that is visible at close range. A colour-matched sealant keeps the joint looking neat on powder coated systems.

Can aluminium downpipe joiners be powder coated?

Yes. We offer powder coating in any RAL colour. Although the joiner is mostly concealed inside the pipe, the visible edge at the joint line can sometimes be seen, particularly on lower sections. A colour-matched joiner ensures no bare aluminium is visible at the connection point.

Internal Joiner vs External Collar vs Push-Fit: How Should You Join Downpipes?

Internal joiner (flush joint)

The joiner sits inside the pipe, so the outside of the downpipe remains smooth with no visible connection. This is the standard method for aluminium round downpipe systems and produces the cleanest finished appearance. The joint is strong, watertight when sealed, and easy to fit. This is the method used by our system and the one we recommend.

External collar

A separate collar or band sits around the outside of the joint, clamping the two pipe ends together. This produces a visible ring at every joint, which breaks up the clean line of the downpipe. External collars are more commonly associated with cast iron rainwater systems. They are functional but less visually refined than an internal flush joint.

Push-fit (swaged pipe)

Some aluminium downpipe systems use a swaged design where one end of each pipe length is slightly reduced in diameter so it pushes directly into the next length without a separate joiner. This is a neat system, but it only works with swaged pipe. Our system uses flush joint pipe with a separate internal joiner, which gives you flexibility to cut the pipe to any length on site without worrying about which end is the reduced diameter.

For a clean appearance and practical flexibility on site, the internal joiner method is the right choice for our aluminium round downpipe system.

Part of a Complete Round Downpipe System

This internal joiner is one component in a complete aluminium round downpipe system manufactured by Online Metal Store Ltd. The full system includes round downpipe in 3 metre lengths, internal joiners (this product), adjustable pipe clips, bends, shoes and adjustable offsets. The downpipe connects to our aluminium half round gutter via a round gutter outlet. Order the full system together for a guaranteed colour and profile match across every component.

Standards and Compliance

Our aluminium downpipe system is manufactured to meet the requirements of BS EN 612 (eaves gutters and rainwater downpipes made from metal sheet). All joints should be sealed to prevent water leakage in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. Stainless steel fixings are recommended for masonry substrates to avoid galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals.
