1.5mm Aluminium Inspection Chambers - 450mm x 450mm | Parapet Version

An access chamber for inspection and maintenance of drainage outlets on green and living roofs, mounted into the parapet wall rather than set into the roof deck. The parapet version is used where the drainage outlet is at the parapet base or integrated into the wall construction. It gives maintenance access to the outlet without disturbing the roof substrate or waterproofing layer. At 450mm x 450mm, it provides a wider access opening than the 300mm x 300mm parapet version, suited to deeper or more complex drainage details that require more working space.

The chamber is manufactured in 1.5mm aluminium, powder coated in any RAL colour, and available in four depth options from 150mm to 350mm to match the parapet construction depth where the chamber is installed. Four variants are available across two sizes and two mounting configurations: this page covers the 450mm x 450mm parapet version only. Manufactured at the Online Metal Store Ltd facility in Chelmsford, Essex.

Parapet Version or Deck Version: Which Do You Need?

This is the most important selection decision before ordering. The two versions mount in different positions on the roof and serve different drainage outlet configurations.

Parapet Version (This Product)

The parapet inspection chamber is installed into the parapet wall, typically at the base of the parapet where a drainage outlet, weep hole, or overflow pipe is positioned. The chamber face is flush with or recessed into the parapet wall surface, and the access cover opens outward or forward for maintenance. This version is used when the drainage point is in the wall construction rather than in the roof deck itself. On green roofs where overflow drainage passes through the parapet rather than through the deck membrane, the parapet chamber provides access without touching the planted surface.

Deck Version

The deck inspection chamber sits flush in the roof deck surface, surrounding a deck-level drainage outlet or roof drain. It provides access through the substrate and growing medium layers on a green roof to the drain below. The cover sits at or near the top of the substrate layer. For deck-mounted drainage outlets, use the 450mm x 450mm deck version or the 300mm x 300mm deck version.

300x300mm or 450x450mm: Choosing the Right Size

Use the 300mm x 300mm Version When

The drainage outlet is straightforward, access requirements are standard, and the parapet construction allows a smaller chamber opening. The 300mm x 300mm parapet inspection chamber is the more common specification on residential green roofs and smaller commercial flat roofs with uncomplicated drainage details.

Use the 450mm x 450mm Version (This Product) When

The parapet outlet detail is more complex, multiple pipes or connections are present at the outlet position, the parapet wall is thicker and requires a wider access opening for a maintenance operative to reach the outlet, or the green roof system specification calls for a larger access chamber for inspection purposes. The additional 150mm in each dimension gives meaningfully more working space at the chamber opening.

What the Depth Options Mean

The four size options in the dropdown (150mm, 200mm, 250mm, 350mm) are the depth of the chamber measured from the face of the parapet to the back of the chamber box. Select the depth that matches the wall construction depth at the position where the chamber is installed.

  • 150mm: suitable for thin parapet walls or cavity wall constructions with a shorter through-wall dimension at the outlet position.

  • 200mm: standard depth for most residential and light commercial parapet walls.

  • 250mm: suited to wider cavity wall parapets or insulated parapet constructions where the wall is thicker at the outlet position.

  • 350mm: maximum standard depth for deep commercial parapets, heavily insulated wall builds, or positions where the outlet is set deeper into the wall construction.

If the chamber depth required falls between available options, select the next size up. The chamber can be installed with the back plate recessed within the wall if the depth overshoots the exact wall thickness slightly, but it cannot be used if the depth is less than the wall thickness at the installation point.

Key Benefits

  • Larger 450mm access opening: provides more working space than the 300mm version for accessing complex drainage details, inspecting outlet pipework, and carrying out maintenance in confined positions.

  • Parapet-mounted configuration: installs into the parapet wall to access drainage outlets at the wall base without disturbing the roof deck surface, substrate or waterproofing layer.

  • Four depth options: 150mm, 200mm, 250mm and 350mm to match the parapet construction depth at the outlet position.

  • 1.5mm aluminium, corrosion resistant: does not rust or degrade on a permanently damp parapet surface in contact with soil, substrate or moisture from the green roof system.

  • Lift-off cover for quick access: the cover removes without tools for fast inspection and cleaning visits, and replaces securely to maintain the chamber seal.

  • Any RAL colour: powder coated to match the parapet coping, fascia or rainwater goods on the same building.

  • UK manufactured in Chelmsford: precision fabricated to consistent dimensions for a reliable fit in the parapet wall opening.

Where the Parapet Inspection Chamber Is Used

Green and Living Roof Parapet Drainage

The primary application. Green roofs require drainage outlets to handle the flow from storm events, and on buildings where the drainage exits through the parapet wall, the parapet inspection chamber provides the maintenance access point. The 450mm x 450mm size is used where the outlet detail at the parapet is complex enough to require more working space than the 300mm version provides. Ordered alongside aluminium retention trims and 1.5mm retention trim for a complete green roof edge and drainage detail.

Balcony and Terrace Parapet Drainage Points

Commercial and residential balconies and roof terraces with parapet walls often route drainage through the parapet base. Where the outlet is at the parapet, the parapet inspection chamber provides clean access for inspection and clearance of the outlet without requiring the balcony surface finish to be disturbed. The 450mm x 450mm size suits wider parapet constructions and outlet positions that benefit from the additional access space.

Commercial Flat Roof Parapet Outlets

On commercial buildings with flat roofs that drain to parapet outlets or overflow weirs, the parapet inspection chamber is part of the maintenance access specification. Facilities managers and roofing contractors need reliable, documented access to every drainage outlet on the roof. Using an aluminium chamber with a lift-off cover at each outlet provides that access without compromising the waterproofing layer. Order alongside aluminium coping and the aluminium drip trim for a complete parapet and roof edge specification from the same UK manufacturer.

Why Aluminium for Inspection Chambers

Plastic access chambers are widely available but carry the same limitations on green roofs as on any external application: UV degradation, brittleness at low temperatures, and a shorter service life than the 20 to 25 year expected lifespan of the waterproofing system they are designed to maintain. On a green roof where the chamber is in permanent contact with moist soil and organic material, a material that does not degrade under sustained moisture exposure is the correct long-term choice.

Aluminium does not rust, does not become brittle in cold weather, and the external grade polyester powder coat maintains its finish for the service life of the roof. The 1.5mm gauge provides the structural rigidity needed for a chamber that takes periodic foot traffic pressure during maintenance visits without deforming.

Why Choose Online Metal Store Ltd

All four inspection chamber variants are manufactured at our Chelmsford facility: two sizes (300x300mm and 450x450mm) and two configurations (parapet and deck), giving a complete inspection chamber range for any green roof drainage specification. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the parapet version and the deck version?

The parapet version installs into the parapet wall to access a drainage outlet at the wall base. The deck version sits flush in the roof deck surface to access a deck-level drain through the substrate layer. Use the parapet version when the drainage outlet is in the wall; use the deck version when it is in the roof deck. The 450mm x 450mm deck version and the 300mm x 300mm deck version are available from the same range.

What do the four depth options mean (150mm, 200mm, 250mm, 350mm)?

These are the depths of the chamber measured from the face of the parapet wall into the wall construction. Select the depth that matches the wall thickness at the position where the chamber is installed. A 200mm depth is standard for most residential parapet walls. Use 250mm or 350mm for thicker insulated parapets or commercial wall constructions where the wall is deeper at the outlet position.

When should I choose 450x450mm rather than 300x300mm?

Choose the 450mm size when the outlet detail is complex enough to benefit from the additional working space, when the parapet wall is wide and the chamber opening needs to be larger to allow a maintenance operative to reach the outlet, or when the system specification calls for the larger chamber. For straightforward outlet details on standard residential green roofs, the 300mm x 300mm parapet version is normally adequate.

How many inspection chambers does a green roof need?

One chamber per drainage outlet on the roof. On a simple domestic green roof extension with one drainage outlet, one chamber is required. On a larger commercial green roof with multiple outlets, one chamber per outlet. Refer to the drainage design for the roof to establish the outlet count and positions before ordering chambers.

Can the chamber be powder coated to match my coping?

Yes. Specify your RAL colour at order and the chamber is finished in the same external grade polyester powder coat as the rest of the OMS aluminium product range. Ordering all green roof components (chambers, retention trims) in the same RAL as the parapet coping and fascia gives a colour-consistent finish across the building envelope.
