2mm Aluminium Flat Coping – 2m Length | 75mm External Leg

The 2m section in the 2mm aluminium flat coping range. Two of these sections cover a 4m parapet face with one joint and no waste. On any parapet face between 2m and 5m, the 2m section gives fewer joints than 1m sections and less material waste than a 3m section where the face does not divide neatly. Available in 29 width sizes from 185mm to 885mm to suit domestic and light commercial parapet wall widths, powder coated in any RAL colour, and fabricated to order at the Online Metal Store Ltd facility in Chelmsford. For the system overview and full length selection guide, see the 2mm flat coping 3m length page.

The flat top surface gives a clean, horizontal profile at parapet level. This is the standard coping choice for contemporary buildings, architects' designs and projects where a minimalist parapet line is specified. On a domestic rear extension, a flat-roofed garage, a garden wall or a boundary wall where the horizontal parapet profile suits the architecture, flat coping is the right choice. For projects where positive surface drainage is preferred, the 2mm sloping coping system provides the alternative profile in the same gauge and size range.

Flat or Sloping Coping: Which Is Right for Your Project?

Flat Coping (This Product)

Flat coping has a level top surface that sits horizontally on the parapet. The profile gives a clean, straight line at parapet level that suits contemporary domestic architecture, modern extensions, and commercial buildings where a minimalist parapet detail is specified. It relies on the external leg drip detail and correctly sealed joints for weathertightness rather than a built-in surface slope.

Sloping Coping

Sloping coping has a built-in slope that tilts the top surface toward the external face, actively draining rainwater off the profile. It is common on traditional domestic flat roof extensions across the South East where positive surface drainage is the preferred specification. If the existing coping on the building is sloping and you need to extend or replace the system, use the 2mm sloping coping range to match the original profile.

Flat and sloping coping profiles, corners and stopends are not interchangeable. Once you have chosen a profile, all components in the installation must match.

2mm or 3mm Flat Coping: Getting the Gauge Right

Use 2mm When

The project is a domestic flat roof extension, garage, garden wall, boundary wall or other light construction where the parapet wall produces a coping girth below 510mm. The site is not exposed, the building is not elevated, and the specification does not call for the heavier gauge. The 2mm flat coping system with 29 sizes from 185mm to 885mm covers virtually all domestic and light commercial parapet wall widths in the UK.

Use 3mm When

The project is commercial, the parapet wall produces a coping girth of 510mm or above, the NHBC or structural specification calls for 3mm, or the building is on an exposed site or at two or more storeys. The 3mm flat coping 2m length is available from the same Chelmsford range in the 510mm to 1060mm size range with a 5mm bracket specification.

Why the 2m Length for Domestic Parapet Runs

The 2m section reduces joint count compared with 1m sections on any parapet face over 2m. On a 4m parapet face, two 2m sections give one joint and no waste. Four 1m sections give three joints. Every joint is a sealant line; fewer joints means less sealant application and a cleaner, continuous coping line across the parapet face. On medium parapet faces of 2m to 5m, the 2m section is consistently the most efficient single-length choice. For longer runs, plan with 3m sections first and use 2m sections for infill where the remaining face length falls between 1m and 3m. For short parapet faces and tight-access positions, the 1m section is the right choice.

Key Benefits

  • Fewer joints on medium parapet faces: two 2m sections cover a 4m face with one joint. Reducing joint count reduces sealant applications and produces a cleaner coping line.

  • Horizontal flat profile: clean, level top surface that suits contemporary domestic and commercial architecture. No visible tilt or angle on the finished parapet.

  • 29 domestic sizes: 185mm to 885mm in 25mm increments covers parapet wall widths from approximately 15mm to 715mm wide, serving the full range of domestic and light commercial single-skin and cavity parapet constructions.

  • 75mm equal legs: equal 75mm overhangs on both the external and internal faces give a balanced, symmetrical profile that looks right against domestic parapet widths.

  • Concealed bracket fixing: the 4mm bracket is fixed to the wall top before the coping is installed. No fastener penetrates the face or top surface of the installed section.

  • Any RAL colour: order all system components in the same RAL for a batch-consistent colour match from corners and stopends to lengths and brackets.

  • Made to order in Chelmsford: non-returnable unless faulty. Measure and apply the sizing formula before ordering.

How to Measure: Calculating Your Width Size

The 29 size options from 185mm to 885mm refer to the overall WIDTH of the coping profile, not the run length. Every section on this page is 2m long. The formula:

Wall width + 170mm = the size to order.

Measure the parapet wall width at the top from outside face to inside face. Add 75mm (external leg) + 75mm (internal leg) + 10mm + 10mm (returns) = 170mm.

  • 90mm wide wall: 90 + 170 = 260mm

  • 165mm wide wall: 165 + 170 = 335mm

  • 240mm wide wall: 240 + 170 = 410mm

  • 340mm wide wall: 340 + 170 = 510mm

Note: this formula is the same for both the 2mm and 3mm flat coping systems with 75mm equal legs. It is different from the sloping coping formula (100mm leg: wall width + 195mm; 125mm leg: wall width + 220mm). Apply the correct formula for the system you are ordering.

How Many 2m Sections Do You Need?

Plan each parapet face separately. The 2m section is the right primary length for faces of 2m to 5m. For longer faces, use 3m sections first.

  • 4m face: two 2m sections, one joint, no waste.

  • 5m face: two 2m sections plus a 1m cut. One joint.

  • 6m face: three 2m sections with two joints, or two 3m sections with one joint. The 3m sections are more efficient here.

  • 3m face: one 2m section plus a 1m section. One joint.

Add up the 2m section requirements across all faces. Corner pieces and stopends are counted per corner and per terminal end, not per linear metre. For the full length selection guide (1m vs 2m vs 3m with worked examples), see the 2mm flat coping 3m length page.

Installation Overview

Mark the 4mm bracket positions before fixing anything. Fix brackets at maximum 1000mm centres, with one within 150-200mm of every run terminal, corner junction and stopend position. A 2m section needs a minimum of three brackets: one near each end and at least one intermediate. Confirm all brackets are flat to the wall top before pressing any coping.

Press the flat coping sections onto the brackets from the fixed terminal end. Apply a continuous bead of colour coded sealant in the matching RAL to the internal face of each joint before butting the next section. Keep the sealant bead continuous.

Lock the coping to the brackets using colour coded fasteners in the matching RAL. Fit the closed stopends at the run terminals and the 90 degree corner pieces at every change of direction. Apply a finishing sealant bead on all external joint faces.

Where the 2m Flat Coping Section Is Used

Domestic Flat Roof Extensions

On single-storey rear extensions with a flat or shallow-pitch roof and parapet walls, the 2m flat coping section handles medium-length parapet faces efficiently. A 4m rear elevation parapet face takes two 2m sections with one joint. A 3.5m side parapet face takes one 2m section and a short cut. The flat profile is the correct choice where the specification or design calls for a horizontal coping line.

Garages and Outbuildings

Flat-roofed garages and domestic outbuildings typically have parapet faces of 2m to 5m per side. The 2m flat coping section covers these faces with one or two joints per face and minimal waste. Use the 2m section for the primary faces and the 1m section for any remaining infill pieces.

Garden and Boundary Walls

Low garden and boundary walls with aluminium flat coping are increasingly common on contemporary residential properties. The flat profile gives a clean, architectural finish that suits modern garden wall details. The 2m section gives the minimum joint count on wall faces between 2m and 5m and is the natural choice for this application.

Contemporary Architectural Projects

On architect-designed domestic projects and premium extensions where the parapet coping is a designed element of the elevation, the flat profile with its sharp, horizontal shadow line is frequently specified. The 2m section keeps joint lines to a minimum on the visible parapet faces. For the full 2mm flat coping system and accessory range, visit the Aluminium Flat Copings collection page.

Why Aluminium Flat Coping

Concrete and stone copings require mortar bedding, crack under freeze-thaw cycling at joints, and need periodic repointing. uPVC fades and becomes brittle over time. Aluminium flat coping does not crack, does not need mortar, does not fade under UV, and the external grade powder coat finish holds its colour and surface quality for the service life of the building. For a domestic extension or garden wall that is expected to need no coping maintenance for 20 to 25 years, aluminium is the correct long-term material choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between flat and sloping aluminium coping?

Flat coping has a level top surface that sits horizontally on the parapet and gives a clean horizontal line at building level. Sloping coping has a built-in slope that tilts toward the external face and actively drains rainwater off the coping surface. Both use the same concealed bracket fixing method. The profiles, corners and stopends are not interchangeable between the two systems. For 2mm sloping coping, see the Aluminium Sloping Coping collection.

When should I use a 2m section rather than 1m or 3m?

Use the 2m section for parapet faces of 2m to 5m where it gives fewer joints than 1m sections and less waste than a 3m section. On a 4m face, two 2m sections give one joint. For longer runs, plan with 3m sections first and use 2m sections as infill. For short runs and tight access, use the 1m section.

What size do I need?

Wall width + 170mm = the size to order. Measure the parapet wall width at the top from outside face to inside face, then add 170mm. A 165mm wide wall gives 335mm. A 240mm wall gives 410mm. A 340mm wall gives 510mm. The 29 sizes are coping widths, not run lengths. Every section on this page is 2m long regardless of the size selected.

What bracket do I use with 2mm flat coping?

The 4mm aluminium coping bracket is the correct bracket for all 2mm flat coping. Do not use the 5mm bracket, which is for 3mm coping only. Fix brackets at maximum 1000mm centres with one bracket within 150-200mm of each run terminal, corner and stopend position. A 2m section needs a minimum of three brackets.

When should I use 3mm instead of 2mm flat coping?

Use 3mm when the project is commercial, when the parapet wall produces a coping girth of 510mm or above, when the structural or NHBC specification requires 3mm, or when the site is exposed or the building is two or more storeys. For standard domestic applications with coping girths below 510mm, 2mm is the correct specification. See the 3mm flat coping 2m length for the commercial gauge option.
