2mm Aluminium Flat Coping – Stopend Upstand | 75mm External Leg
2mm Aluminium Flat Coping – Stopend Upstand | 75mm External Leg
A stopend upstand terminates the end of a flat coping run with an integrated raised lip on the top surface. The upstand is a vertical wall of aluminium, formed as part of the same pressed piece, that rises from the top face of the coping at the terminal end. It serves a specific weathertightness function: when wind drives rain horizontally along the parapet face, the upstand stops the water from running off the open end of the run and tracking down the wall behind. On exposed parapet terminals, this is the difference between a clean dry wall face below and a streaked, water-marked one.
Manufactured at the Online Metal Store Ltd facility in Chelmsford in 2mm aluminium, available in the same 29 sizes (185mm to 885mm) as the rest of the 2mm flat coping range with 75mm equal legs, powder coated in any RAL colour. For the alternative termination piece without the integrated upstand, see the 2mm flat coping closed stopend.
Closed Stopend or Stopend Upstand: Which Do You Need?
Both products terminate the end of a flat coping run. The difference is in how they handle wind-driven rain at the terminal position.
Closed Stopend
A closed stopend caps the open end of the coping run with a flush vertical face. The top of the stopend matches the level of the coping top, so the finished profile reads as a single flat surface terminating cleanly at the run end. This is the standard choice for sheltered parapet terminals where wind-driven rain is not a concern, and where a clean, minimal end detail is preferred for visual reasons.
Stopend Upstand (This Product)
A stopend upstand has the same termination function but adds a raised lip running across the top of the closure. The upstand wall rises 25mm to 50mm above the coping top surface (depending on the system specification) at the terminal end, forming a small barrier that stops water from being driven off the run end and onto the wall face below. Use the upstand version on exposed parapet terminals, on coastal sites, on tall buildings where wind exposure at parapet level is significant, and on any terminal where the parapet face below the coping is finished in a material that would be marked or damaged by water tracking down it.
Both products are made to the same width sizes and use the same fixing method. The choice depends on the exposure of the specific terminal position, not on which other components you have ordered.
Key Benefits
• Integrated upstand prevents wind-driven rain runoff: the raised lip across the terminal stops water from running off the open end of the run and down the wall face below. Particularly valuable on exposed sites and at building corners where wind funnels along the parapet.
• Single-piece construction: the upstand is formed as part of the same pressed aluminium piece as the rest of the stopend. No separate joint between the stopend and the upstand to seal or fail over time.
• 29 sizes matching the run lengths: 185mm to 885mm in 25mm increments. Order the same width size as your straight coping lengths.
• Concealed fixing: the upstand stopend uses the same 4mm bracket as the run lengths. No fastener penetrates the visible coping or upstand surface.
• Any RAL colour, batch-matched: order in the same RAL as the rest of the system for batch-consistent colour from the same Chelmsford coating run.
• Made to order in Chelmsford: non-returnable unless faulty. Verify size and orientation before ordering.

How Many Stopends Do You Need?
One stopend is required per run terminal end. Count the run terminals on your parapet plan: each terminal needs either a closed stopend or a stopend upstand (this product) depending on the exposure and specification at that position.
• Two-end run (a single run with both ends terminating against another structure): 2 stopends.
• Run terminating against a chimney or wall at one end and exposed at the other: 1 stopend at the exposed end.
• Stepped parapet with multiple run terminals: 1 stopend per terminal.
• Continuous perimeter coping with no terminals: 0 stopends (corners only).
A stopend upstand is the right choice at exposed terminals on exposed sites. A closed stopend is the right choice at sheltered terminals or where the parapet face below is unaffected by occasional water tracking.
Installation
Fix a 4mm aluminium coping bracket within 150-200mm of the run terminal position to support the stopend. The stopend upstand presses onto the bracket in the same way as a straight coping length, with the upstand at the terminal face away from the run direction. Press the adjacent straight section up to the stopend upstand and apply a continuous bead of colour coded sealant in the matching RAL to the internal face of the joint between the straight section and the stopend.
Lock the stopend to the bracket using a colour coded fastener in the matching RAL. Apply a finishing bead of sealant on the external joint face. The integrated upstand requires no separate sealant application along its length: it is a single pressed piece with no joints.
Where the Stopend Upstand Is Used
Exposed Coastal and Open-Site Parapet Terminals
On buildings near the Essex, Suffolk or Kent coastline, on hilltop and ridge sites, and on any building where wind loading at parapet level is meaningfully above the standard sheltered baseline, the stopend upstand is the correct termination. Wind-driven rain at these positions is the rule rather than the exception, and a closed stopend without an upstand will allow water to track down the wall face below the terminal during sustained driven rain events.
Tall Building Parapet Terminals
On buildings of two storeys or more, wind speeds at parapet level are higher than at ground level on the same site. The pressure differential at building corners drives rain horizontally along the parapet face. The stopend upstand at parapet terminals on these buildings keeps water from being driven off the run end onto the wall face below.
Parapets with Sensitive Wall Finishes Below
Where the wall finish below the parapet is a render, a self-coloured masonry surface, or any finish that would be marked, stained or damaged by water tracking down it, the stopend upstand is the correct termination regardless of the site exposure. The cost of the upstand is significantly less than the cost of repairing or repainting a streaked render face after the first severe weather event.
Roof Terraces and Balconies
On accessible roof terraces and balconies with parapet walls, the stopend upstand at the terminal positions prevents water tracking down to the deck or balcony surface where it might cause staining or pooling at the perimeter. Order alongside flat coping run lengths and 90 degree corners for a complete terrace parapet specification.
Why a Pressed Aluminium Upstand
The integrated upstand is the technical advantage of this product. A site-formed upstand built up from sheet metal or a separate piece bonded to a closed stopend would rely on a sealed joint between the upstand and the coping top to be weathertight. That joint is the most exposed sealant line on the entire parapet, sitting at the terminal end where wind concentration is highest. Sealant joints in this position fail over time.
A pressed single-piece upstand has no joint to fail. The upstand is part of the same aluminium pressing as the stopend itself. The only sealant joints in the installation are the joint between the stopend and the adjacent straight coping section, which is a sheltered internal joint, and the joint at the bottom edge where the stopend leg meets the wall, which is no different from any other coping joint on the run.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a closed stopend and a stopend upstand?
A closed stopend caps the run end with a flush vertical face level with the coping top. A stopend upstand (this product) adds a raised lip across the terminal that prevents wind-driven rain from running off the run end and tracking down the wall face below. Use the closed stopend at sheltered terminals where rain runoff is not a concern. Use the stopend upstand at exposed terminals, on coastal sites, on tall buildings, and where the wall face below is sensitive to water tracking.
When should I choose the upstand version over the closed stopend?
Whenever wind-driven rain at the terminal position is a realistic condition. Specifically: exposed coastal and open-site terminals, parapet terminals on buildings of two storeys or more, terminal positions at building corners where wind concentrates along the parapet face, and any terminal where the wall below is finished in a material that would be marked or stained by water tracking down it.
What size do I need?
Wall width + 170mm = the size to order. The 29 sizes are coping widths, not run lengths. Order the same width size as your straight coping lengths in the same run. A 165mm wide wall gives 335mm. A 240mm wall gives 410mm. A 340mm wall gives 510mm.
Does the stopend upstand come in left and right handed versions?
No. The flat coping system has equal 75mm legs on both sides, so the stopend upstand is symmetrical and works at either end of the run regardless of orientation. This is different from the sloping coping system, where left and right handed stopends are specified to account for the slope direction. For sloping coping stopends, see the Aluminium Sloping Coping range.
Is this product anodised or powder coated?
Powder coated only. The finish is an external grade polyester powder coat available in any RAL colour. These products are not anodised. Any reference to anodising on the current product page is a factual error and will be corrected on publication. Powder coating is the only available finish across the entire OMS aluminium product range.
How is the upstand attached to the rest of the stopend?
It is not attached: it is part of the same pressed aluminium piece. The stopend and the upstand are formed together from a single sheet of 2mm aluminium with the upstand pressed up at the terminal face during fabrication. There is no separate joint, no bond line and no sealant connection between the upstand and the stopend body. This is the technical advantage of a pressed aluminium upstand stopend over a site-formed alternative.
